We Are Using Recovered Loots To Fund 2017 Budget – Buhari

Muhammadu Buhari

Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari says on Tuesday that his administration is using part of the stolen funds recovered from Nigerians who looted the economy to fund the 2017 budget.

Buhari spoke at the 22nd Annual Conference of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria in Abuja.

Represented by the Accountant General of the Federation, Alhaji Idris Ahmed, the president said the government had resolved to use some of the recovered stolen funds to finance the 2017 budget.

He said his administration had practically done much in delivering on its core focus of diversifying the economy.

In his words: “Part of the stolen funds recovered is being used by government to finance the 2017 budget. Power generation has peaked at an all-time high of 7,001 Megawatts in the third quarter of 2017.”

Buhari added that his government was aiming at the production of 10,000 Megawatts of electricity by the year 2020.

He said the firm implementation of the Treasury Single Account since September 2015 had significantly enhanced transparency in the Federal Government’s Public Financial Management System.

ANAN Chairman of Council, Alhaji Shehu Ladan, pledged the support of the association to the government’s economic agenda.

Ladan said, “The accountant is key. We are calling on our members to increase their integrity quotient. As an association, we are strengthening our discipline mechanism to ensure that members found wanting do not go unpunished.”

He said it was important for the government to ensure the reinvestment of the recovered stolen funds to make for quicker recovery of the economy, PUNCH reports.

Hon. Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani has been elected as the new Kaduna Speaker.

His election came barely an hour after Hon Aminu Abdullahi Shagali resigned as Speaker.

Hon. Zailani, who represents Igabi West Constituency in the Assembly, was the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly until his election to lead the House on Tuesday.

Zailani is a strong member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also, Hon Mukhtar Isa Hazo, representing Bassawa Constituency has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

Both of them have been sworn-in by the Clark of the Assembly.

The former Speaker, who represents Sabon-Gari Constituency in the Assembly, officially submitted his resignation letter to clerk of the House Tuesday morning.

The Nation gathered that members of the House had started collecting signatures to impeach him before he eventually bowed to pressure and resigned.

Chairman, House Committee on information, Honourable Tanimu Musa confirmed he submitted his resignation letter.

However, Shagali’s offence warranting the alleged plan impeachment was yet to be unraveled as the time of filing this report.

The 40-year old Aminu Abdullahi Shagali became the Assembly Speaker on the coming of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to power in 2015.

2023: Presidency Should Return To South — El-Rufai

el-rufai - Kaduna State Governor

Kaduna State  Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has insisted that the North has no justification to remain in power after the expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s second tenure.

El-Rufai maintained that the Presidency should rightly return to the Southern part of Nigeria.

He said though the constitution of the All Progressives Congress, APC, does not make provision for rotation but in the interest of justice, equity and fair play, Presidency should go to other regions of the country.

The Kaduna governor said: “The general political consensus in Nigeria is that the Presidency should rotate between the North and the South. It is not written but everyone understands it.

“In some of the parties, like the PDP, it is even written down in their constitution but it was breached in 2015. I think that every politician of honour should understand and abide by that consensus except there is an extenuating circumstance compelling it to be set aside. What could this be?

“President Yar’Adua died in office and it was compulsory for Jonathan to continue but when 2011 election came, there were many people who insisted that Jonathan should step aside for a northerner to complete the tenure of Yar’Adua but I opposed it because I didn’t think it was proper for an incumbent that got there not by his own design should be stopped from contesting when the constitution has not barred him from running.

“In the APC, we deliberately omitted rotational Presidency in our constitution and the emergence of a presidential candidate does not take into account zoning and that was why in 2015, Rochas Okorocha from the East contested, Sam Nda-Isaiah contested, Buhari, Kwankwaso and others contested.”

El-Rufai a chieftain of APC, added that presidential candidates are chosen on the basis of merit and general acceptance.

“I can say that as distinct from the PDP, APC has no rotational Presidency but candidates are selected strictly on the basis of political merit and the general acceptability of the candidate.

“I want to say that those of us from Northern Nigeria honour agreements. We do not violate unwritten political agreements and I will be the last person to lead in violating that agreement. I may have a personal view but that should be the basis. I don’t care where you come from but I look for merit.

“But as a group, the Northern APC will have to sit down and endorse someone, most likely someone from the South, because after eight years of Buhari, I don’t think the Presidency should remain in the north unless there is some extenuating circumstances. But all things being equal, we will honour our agreement and we keep our words,” he said.
