Since Spanish champions FC Barcelona announced the signing of striker Antoine Griezmann on Friday for 120 million euros (£107 million) from Atletico Madrid, the 2018/2019 La Liga runners-up have been fuming.
They said the Catalan club had not paid enough to trigger the player’s release clause.
The 28-year-old France forward rejected a move to FC Barcelona in 2018, but he did announce in May that he was leaving Atletico Madrid.
There, he has spent the last five seasons since signing from Real Sociedad in 2014.
Barca have been trying to lure Griezmann to the Nou Camp since November 2017, but the forward signed a new five-year deal with Atletico Madrid in June 2018.
It had a 200 million euros buy-out clause, which dropped to 120 million euros on July 1 this year.
Atletico Madrid said Griezmann’s May 14 announcement that he was leaving the club is proof a deal had already been struck between him and Barca before his buy-out clause dropped.
“Atletico Madrid considers that the deposited amount is insufficient to cover (Griezmann’s) buy-out clause, since it is obvious that the agreement between the player and FC Barcelona was closed before the clause was reduced from 200 million euros to 120 million euros,” the club said in a statement.
“It was also prior to the date on which the clause was modified the communication that the player made on May 14 announcing his disassociation from the club.
“Atletico Madrid believes the termination of the contract happened before the end of the last season due to facts, acts and demonstrations made by the player, and therefore has already initiated procedures it has deemed appropriate to protect their rights and lawful interests.”
Barca’s long-running pursuit of the Frenchman, who scored 133 goals in all competitions for Atletico Madrid, has been the worst-kept secret in Spanish football.
The Spanish champions announced his signing in a statement earlier on Friday, in which they revealed his new five-season contract included an 800 million euros buy-out clause.
“FC Barcelona has paid the 120 million euro buyout clause to release Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid,” FC Barcelona said.
Griezmann’s capture adds further firepower to a Barca strikeforce already containing Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez and could yet be bolstered further by the return of Neymar Jr.
Spanish media reports say the Brazil forward is keen to return to Barca and regrets leaving the club for Paris St-Germain (PSG) in 2017 for a world record 222 million euros.
Cristiano Ronaldo Poses Topless In The Gym With Sisters
Cristiano Ronaldo might be locked down in Madeira but he is clearly not letting himself go amid the Coronavirus crisis.
The Juventus forward retreated to his native island towards the start of the month after his mother suffered a stroke and he has decided to stay there as COVID19 spread across the world.
While the Serie A season has been suspended, Ronaldo has been staying at a luxury villa that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.
And the 35-year-old has kept up his famously stringent workout regime, posing in a photo that his sister Katia uploaded to her Instagram.
The Portuguese forward showed off his six-pack and incredible dorsal muscles, and pulled up his shorts in trademark style as he stood with members of his family, including his niece Alicia and other sister Elma.
Ronaldo was in top form during the season before Serie A was suspended, and had hit a staggering 13 goals in his last 11 matches in all competition.
He has also been clear to his followers that they must follow the government advice and stay at home: “If you ever dreamed of playing for millions around the world, now is your chance. Play inside, play for the world.”
It was revealed over the weekend that Ronaldo will join forces with his agent Jorge Mendes to help fund the fight against coronavirus in Portugal.
AS report that Mendes has spent a significant amount of money buying 200,000 gowns and three ventilators for the hospital in Porto, where a National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) field tent has been set up to facilitate with operations due to a flood of coronavirus patients.
Man City Coach Guardiola And Lionel Messi Donate €1MILLION Each To Help Fight COVID-19
Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has donated one million euros ($1.08 million) to help buy medical supplies for the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in his native Spain.
The former FC Barcelona boss gave the money to the Medical College of Barcelona to buy “medical equipment that is currently lacking in health centres in Catalonia,” the body said in a statement.
His donation will also be used to produce ventilators to treat patients and protective gear for health care workers in Guardiola’s northeastern region of Spain.
Meanwhile Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic said it had received a donation from FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi to help it fight the virus.
“Thank you Leo, for your support and commitment,” the hospital added in a tweet.
While the hospital did not say how much money the player donated, Catalan sports daily Mundo Deportivo said it was one million euros.
With the pandemic spreading across the world, Spain has been one of the worst-hit countries, logging the third highest number of deaths with the latest toll standing at 2,696, and the total number of infections nearing 40,000.
Man Utd To Sign Ighalo Permanently For £15m
Nigerian striker, Odion Ighalo is set to sign permanently for Manchester United, as the Premier League club lines up a £15m bid for him.
According to Daily Mail, Manchester United will pay up to £15million this summer to sign Ighalo as his temporary move from Shanghai Shenhua is set to end on May 31.
Shanghai are prepared to sell Odion Ighalo and have put a £15m valuation on the player, and with his impressive form, that seems like a bargain.
Since signing for the club in the January transfer window, the Nigerian striker has scored four goals in his first eight matches for Manchester United.
Earlier this month, Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted that United were interested in making Ighalo’s move permanent.
‘He will improve and get better,’ said the United boss. He has qualities we saw in him that we needed. And we will still need those qualities next season — so let’s see what we will do.’
