A citizen, Chukwunenye Nweke, recently staged a one man protest in front of a court in Awka, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Willie Obiano as well as the Inspector General of Police, to help him recover his documents in police custody.
He claimed that the documents would help him defend himself as a suspect in the case instituted against him by one Dr Aguiyi Anulika, bordering on defamation of character.
Nweke was standing trial in charge number MAW/97C/2019 in court 2 of Awka Magistrate Court, Amawbia, before Magistrate Mike Anyadiegwu.
During and after the trial, the defendant stood with his mouth covered with tape and cotton wool, while the witness, Dr Aguiyi Anulika, alleged that she was being harassed and threatened by the defendant and his cohorts, purportedly co-administrators with Nweke of a Facebook handle named 33 Awka villages.
His words, “I am calling on President Mohammad Buhari, Governor Willie Obiano and the IG of police, Mohammed Adamu, to compel OC Legal, zone 9, Umuahia, to release all the reports and other evidence related to my matter.
“As a suspect, I have the statutory right to adequate facilities to defend myself. They should provide me with the CTC of all documents and police investigation on the letter I had written to AIG zone 9 since July, 2014.
“I have been writing AIG zone 9 to investigate corruption of justice by police, but they are not doing anything about it. 10th July, 2014, I made a report to AIG zone 9; 21st October, 2014, I reported a case of fraudulent activities on the part of the police to zone 9; on 7th December, 2015, I wrote a letter to AIG Zone 9; on 20th July, 2018, I wrote to AIG Zone 9 on how Justice Peter Odili was deceived with fabricated evidence and judgment obtained against me by fraud. In 2019, I wrote a letter against the police officer handling my case for being biased. Let them provide me with their findings and every other evidence in my case; that is my prayer. The president, the IGP and my governor should come to my aid. This is getting too much.
Dr. Aguiyi had alleged that Nweke’s cohorts, which include journalists, used to call her on phone threatening her. She added that the defendant had published on the newspaper defaming her character. This, she said, had soiled her reputation, making people not to association with her again.
