OYC Rejects Toll Gate
Petitions ECOWAS, AU Over Continued Closure Of Enugu Airport
The Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, has said that Igbo Presidency is a project that is closer to achieve than an independent Biafra nation.
The group in a statement signed by its President General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and made available to ORIENTAL TIMES urged Nigerians irrespective of tribe and religion to support the Igbos to take a shot at the Presidency in 2023, arguing that Southeast remains an integral part of Nigeria.
Isiguzoro said: “The process of achieving Biafra independence is more cumbersome and complicated to Igbo Presidency project which is closer.
“Irrespective that Igbos believes in Biafra independence because of the economic hardships, through the nefarious activities of some corrupt customs officers who unleashed untold hardship on Igbo importers and exporters and traders, we are aware that United Nations are yet to receive documents on Biafra independence, or has the European Parliament open discussion on Biafra.
“We are fully aware of the limitations of Biafra agitation, So Igbos will opt to 2023 Igbo Presidency as a re affirmative action towards our togetherness as one Nation even tongue, tribe and religion may differ, Igbos are everywhere in 774 Lgas, it shows Igbos are more Nigerians than any tribe.”
Isiguzoro also disclosed that OYC will on November 1, 2019, inaugurate the newly 2023 National Committee on Igbo Presidency, with a clear mandate to reach out to all youth leaders, opinion molders, respected statesmen, traditional rulers, women and students leaders respectively across all the zones in the country.
The group said that it will further lobby Stakeholders in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the country’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, through strong persuasion in order to break new barriers and build bridges across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
OYC promised to continuously appeal to the conscience of the political actors to concede 2023 Presidential tickets to Igbo speaking states including Rivers and Delta States.
Meanwhile, OYC disclosed in the statement also signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, that it has also petitioned international bodies on the sinister motives behind the closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
The group noted that the Airport has been closed for 43 days without any rehabilitation work ongoing.
“We have petitioned to international bodies on the sinister motives behind the Closure of Akanu ibiam Int’l Airport Enugu for 43 days now without a single rehabilitation work going on there.
“After our observations through the strong resolutions and warning to the Minister for Aviation, Sen Hadi Sirika last week, the General Manager Corporate affairs, Mrs Herrietta Yakubu hurriedly dished out Press release to the public that work will soon begin, till now weeds have taken over the airport.
“We appreciate the untiring efforts of South East Governors led by Gov Dave umahi on getting palliative care of Igbos on the closure of Akanu ibiam Int’l airport,” the statement partly read.
Similarly, the OYC also condemned the Federal Government plans to erect toll gates on Highways. It called on President Muhammadu Buhari to issue a Presidential order for the ministry of Works and Housing to rescind on the policy.
“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to give Presidential order for the ministry of Works and housing to rescind on the obnoxious policy of erecting toll Gate in our federal highways, because Igbos cry over dilapidated Federal highways in the South East which had worsen during this raining season,it’s adding salt to injury by erecting toll Gates on bad roads, imaging erecting toll Gates on Enugu-Ph roads (Aba Axis) which is a death trap or a toll Gates on Aba/Calabar Expressways overtaken by Bushes and hunters are having a great day, or a toll gate on Onitsha/Akokwa/Okigwe Expressways which is now a trekking routes only for bicycles and motorcycles, is it Abaomoge Ugep Road, or Ohafia/Arochukwu/Calabar Expressways which is the only bridge connecting Abia State had the only bridge connecting Abia/Akwa Ibom/cross River had collapsed, or Enugu Onitsha Expressways that you will erect toll Gates and expect Igbos to pay… Federal Executive Council on its valedictory sessions on May 22nd 2019 approved the Expansion and rehabilitation of Aba/Calabar Expressways road, Rehabilitation of Ikot Ekpene/Umuahia Expressways, dualization of Owerri/Umuahia Expressways, dualization of Aba/Owerri Expressway, Abaomoge ugep Road, and the same Minister Fashola is there yet to commence work on any of these roads, erecting toll Gates will send wrong signals, Presidency should suspend and scrape such obnoxious policy its Anti people’s policy.” the statement concluded.
