Ex-President Ibrahim Babangida Is Not Dead, Says Spokesman

Prince Kassim Afegbua, spokesman of former military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) has refuted the report that he (IBB) is dead.

Reports on Sunday emerged on social media that IBB died in the early hours of Sunday, December 15th.

However, Afegbua in a statement described the report as ‘fake news.

The statement reads, “It has become consistent fake news for quite some time now wishing our own IBB, the one we easily refer to as “the last don” of Nigeria politics, dead.

“The “fake news bill” would be a suitable response to this category of fake news carrier.

“IBB is very much alive and bubbling. He just started attending to friends and associates who came to see him today, Sunday, 15th December, 2019 right here at his Minna Hilltop mansion. He is full of life and in his characteristic bubbling mood.

“May Allah forgive those who wish IBB dead. God is the giver and taker of life, not humans. Death, as the irrevocable end of all creation, will surely come to everyone some day and at the appointed time and hour, but to deliberately spread fake news and wish someone dead, is to take humanity to another bizarre level. May Allah forgive them. IBB, by the special grace of Allah, the omniscient and omnipotent One, shall live to fulfill his journey and destiny in life, to the consternation of those who are always wishing him dead. This is about the third time this year.

“We wish to thank those who took time to reach out to us, home and abroad, to find out the truth. We thank you all for your love, care and concern. May Allah grant us all good health, sound mind and long life. Amin.”

Nigeria Back To Military Era — Okogie

Published

Cardinal Okogie

A former Catholic archbishop of Lagos, Anthony Okogie, has said that Nigeria was back to the era of military dictatorship.

In a statement on Friday, the outspoken Catholic priest said that the country needed leaders, who would be interested in listening to the people and entertaining their views no matter how critical it may be.

Okogie, who condemned the now usual disobedience of court orders by President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime, added that it was important for citizens’ rights to be respected for Nigeria to make progress as a democratic society.

He said, “If the executive disobeys court rulings, and if it intimidates and humiliates the judiciary, then we are back to the era when a military junta made laws and interpreted them without any regard for fundamental human rights.

“In a democracy, those who govern are chosen by the people to represent the people. And if they are to represent the people, they must listen to the people. Not only do true democrats listen, they also are not afraid of dissenting opinions.

“They do not arrogate to themselves the power to accuse, arrest, prosecute and convict. But can we candidly say we have democrats at the helm of affairs in this country at this point in time?

“How can we claim to live in a democracy when presidential spokespersons tell us the presidency is always right?

“We have returned to a sinful past when citizens could be abducted and locked up in detention without trial under the pretext of acting in the interest of national security.

“But Nigerians do not want military rule anymore.”

Nigerian youths have been urged by President Muhammadu Buhari to stay and advance the cause of their motherland.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Buhari made this known on Saturday, December 14, at the 44th convocation ceremony of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife.

President Buhari said: “It is high time that universities took more proactive roles in ensuring that graduands perform more meaningfully in the world of works.

“It is in view of this that we wish to exhort our youths to start looking inwards, stay and advance the cause of their motherland. We have no other country than Nigeria. We should remain here to salvage the country together.”

The president said the future of Nigeria lies in the mode and quality of education provided to the citizenry, adding that the government needs support with funding education.

He, therefore, tasked universities on the need for them to increase their internally generated revenue (IGR) to enhance sustainable education.

In his remarks, Eyitope Ogunbodede, the university’s vice-chancellor, announced that the university is currently reviewing the curricular of all academic programmes, in line with current developments and standards.

Ogunbodede added that emphasis was being placed on training job creators and not mere job seekers. He informed the gathering that the university would no longer be dependent on the national grid, as it would soon generate its own electricity.
