Nnamdi Kanu Reacts As Ethiopia Conducts Self-Determination Referendum

Members of Ethiopia’s Sidama minority voted on Wednesday in a self-determination referendum that tests Ethiopia’s ability to manage ethnic demands after more than a year of reforms.

The vote would carve an autonomous region for the Sidama, who comprise about 4% of Ethiopia’s 105 million people, out of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples region, the most ethnically diverse part of Ethiopia. Other groups who share the region now are wary of disenfranchisement or violence.

Reacting on Friday, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, wondered why Nigeria is afraid to honour his persistent request for a referendum.

The IPOB leader accused the Nigerian media for being the reason why a demand for referendum is misconstrued as a call for war.

Kanu’s statement was contained in a post via his handle on micro-blogging site, Twitter.

He said “As Ethiopia conducts Referendum in its Sidama region, one is reminded of a similar UN supervised referendum through which Adamawa became part of Nigeria and Ambazonia a region of Cameroun.

“Today in the ahostorical(sic) Zoological Republic of Nigeria, any demand for referendum is deemed a call for war. Why? Because Nigerian media portrays it as such out of fear to please the all conquering brutal and murderous Abba Kyari regime in Aso Rock and the rest of the ruling illiterate terror sposoring Fulani Cabal.‬”

Kanu further said “The same referendum process that have for centuries guided the civilised union or separation of nations is too difficult for an average Nigerian in 2019 to comprehend. Yet some people claim there is a viable system of education in Nigeria. Very laughable indeed!”

Meanwhile, if the referendum passes as expected, the Sidama will control local taxes, education, security and laws in what would become Ethiopia’s 10th region.

Since Abiy took office in one of Africa’s most tightly controlled states, reforms have brought a more open society and a weaker ruling coalition, emboldening politicians advocating for more rights for their ethnic groups.

The 43-year-old prime minister has also moved to open up one of Africa’s fastest growing economies, and to make peace with neighboring Eritrea.

However, the openness has also brought a surge of long-repressed rivalries between ethnic groups, forcing more than 2 million people out of their homes and killing hundreds, according to the United Nations and monitoring groups.

Dukale Lamiso, head of the Sidama Liberation Front, an activist group, said if the voting were unfair or the referendum should fail to bring autonomy, “that would be a danger for Ethiopia itself because of course there will be violence”.

The vote will also be closely watched for its tone in the run-up to a national election next year, which Abiy has promised will be free and fair. Elections going back to 2005 have been marred by irregularities and violence.

IPOB Reacts To ECOWAS Court Judgement On Nnamdi Kanu’s Petition Against Nigerian Govt

Nnamdi Kanu

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has reacted to the decision of the court of the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) which ruled that its leader, Nnamdi Kanu failed to prove his allegations against the Nigerian government.

Kanu had filed a suit before the court on March 3, 2016 alleging torture, assault, inhuman treatment, and the violation of his property rights by the Federal Government.

The IPOB leader in the suit no ECW/CCJ/APP/06/16 filed before the court by his counsel, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, also claimed that his rights to life, personal integrity, privacy, fair trial, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, freedom of association, and right to self-determination among others were violated following his arrest and detention by agents of the defendant State.

The Community Court in its judgement held that the arrest and detention of the IPOB’s leader, Kanu, was lawful.

The three-member panel of the court also dismissed Kanu’s request for monetary compensation to the tune of $800.

Reacting to the judgement in a statement, IPOB media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, described it as compromised.

Kanu leads IPOB which seeks secession from the Federal Republic of Nigeria to form the Republic of Biafra. The group has been in constant clash with the Nigerian government on many issues, resulting in its proscription by the Buhari led administration.

IPOB To Army: Leave Us Alone, We Have More Important Things To Do

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has denied claim that it doctored and circulated recent video where member of the Boko Haram killed several Nigerian soldiers.

Recall that the Nigerian Army had accused the pro-Biafra group of being behind the trending video that purported that Boko Haram terrorists captured and killed several troops of Operation Lafiya Dole in the North East.

IPOB said it was a shame for the Army to involve the group in their futile attempt impotence and failed effort to fight Boko Haram.

Reacting to the allegation, IPOB’s media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful berated the Army, saying they belittled themselves by involving IPOB in issue of doctoring a video.

Powerful said that IPOB have more important things to do than engaging in doctoring a video where soldiers were killed.

“This recent statement from the thoroughly disgraceful, undignified institution called Nigerian military accusing IPOB of being behind the recent trending video where Boko Haram members torturing and humiliating Nigerian army personnel is laughable.

“This unguarded, shameful and thoroughly unsubstantiated accusation is very typical of an army that specializes in attacking civilian populations in the south but cringe at the sight of a well armed opposition in the north.

“It is quite pathetic how the Nigeria army would belittle themselves so shamelessly in the eyes of the world by involving IPOB in their futile attempt to deflect attention from their impotence and failed effort to fight a terrorism menace they themselves created in Nigeria. The Nigerian Army must understand that Biafra is not Nigeria.

“IPOB have more important things to do than engaging in doctoring a video that is so clear for all to see. Maybe Nigerian the Army think the world is as undiscerning as their typical Nigerian. Rather than coming out in public to make a complete fool of themselves; Buratai and his Nigerian Army should invite forensic experts to corroborate their claim if they are confident they are speaking the truth.

“The video of Boko Haram torturing and humiliating the cowardly Nigerian Army that specialize in committing crimes against unarmed populations in Biafra is real and verifiable. IPOB has nothing to do with the trending video and cannot involve itself with this brotherly spat between Boko Haram and Nigeria Army because they have the same Fulanisation agenda for Nigeria.

“Nigeria Army and Boko Haram are both terrorist organisations pursuing the same goal with the only difference being that Nigerian army specialise exclusively, in attacking civilians in the east.

“This shameful statement from Nigeria Army proves that the Nigeria Army and her sisters security outfits in Nigeria have lost control of their phony war against Boko Haram and as usual are looking to blame IPOB for their pitiful plight.

“Northern elders (allegedly) formed and sponsored Boko Haram to perfect their plans to islamize and Fulanize Nigeria and to make Jonathan’s government ungovernable which they succeeded in doing. We must not forget that Major-General Muhammadu Buhari was named the chief negotiator by Boko Haram for the failed talks in Saudi Arabia in 2014.

“Nigeria soldiers should leave IPOB alone and focus on fighting the monster they created.

“We pity Nigeria Army and gullible Nigerians who cannot see the inevitable violent collapse of Nigeria. What is happening today in Nigeria is the worst form of organized state sponsored hypocrisy.

Recruiting Boko Haram members and other terror groups into the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS and other security formations in Nigeria is a recipe for disaster which IPOB is rightly sensitizing the world about.

“Nigeria is imploding gradually and no amount of lies against IPOB will avert the impending doom of the failed British contraption”, Powerful said.
