Sowore - Sahara Reporters

The Nigerian bank account of Sahara Reporters, owned by embattled journalist and activist Omoyele Sowore, was frozen in October, Committee to Protect Journalists said.

“Sahara Reporters’ Nigeria-based account with Guaranty Trust Bank was frozen without warning in October, La Keisha Landrum Pierre, Sahara Reporters’ chief operating officer, told CPJ.

Pierre told CPJ the bank said the account was subject to “a government hold” and “not able to be operated,” but would not elaborate.

Meanwhile, When CPJ requested comment by email, Ijeoma Nwachukwu, a relationship manager with Guaranty Trust Bank, declined to reveal details about specific accounts because of “duty of confidentiality.”

The committee said apart from freezing the media platform’s bank account, a staff who spoke to CPJ said the platform website was separately disabled twice due to allegations of copyright infringement.

“Surveillance, cyberattacks, and copyright notices against Sahara Reporters mark a concerning pattern of interference and harassment of an investigative news outlet,” Pierra told CPJ.

Pierre said the entire site was “separately taken down for several hours each on October 16 and November 17 in relation to a copyright complaint under U.S. law.”

“Staff report cyber attacks and increased surveillance outside their Lagos office,” CPJ said.

“Sahara Reporters must be permitted to keep the Nigerian public informed without intimidation,” said Angela Quintal, CPJ’s Africa program coordinator.

Meanwhile, the Sahara Reporters’ boss, Omoyele Sowore was arrested by State Security Service August 3 over his planned RevolutionNow Protest, was detained over an alleged plot to overthrow the present government. He was charged with treason, cybercrime, and money laundering.

However, despite court orders granting him bail, he was kept in DSS Custody.

He was released last Thursday but was re-arrested less than 24 hours later over fresh alleged charges.

There Was Corruption Under Jonathan, But In Buhari’s Govt Corruption Is Official — Reno Omokri

Published

on

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has said that corruption under President Muhammadu Buhari has become official.

Omokri, a fierce critic of the Buhari administration stated this when he featured as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

He noted that there was indeed corruption in governments that preceded Buhari’s administration, including that of Jonathan and late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

He however, claimed that while the Jonathan and Yar’Adua’s governments had a human face, that the current government did not.

“When you compare this administration with former President Jonathan’s government or Yar’Adua’s government, yes, there was some corruption but there it’s a human government.

“The difference between that government and this government is that under Jonathan there was corruption, in this administration, corruption is official,” he said.

Responding to a question on the recent arrest of Nigerian Instagram celebrity, Raymond Abass alias Hushpuppi, Omokri said that the current government failed to lead by example.

Omokri said nothing was known about Hushpuppi under Jonathan’s administration, adding that he exhibited what he saw Nigerian leaders doing.

Hushpuppi: I Am Ready To Go To Jail If… — Dogara

Published

on

A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said he is ready to go to jail if the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s ruling party, can establish any form of links or connection between him and Hushpuppi.

Recall that APC had claimed in a statement issued by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, that the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party should be investigated, adding that “at different times, ‘Hushpuppi’ was photographed in Dubai meeting with the PDP’s 2019 presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; former Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; Senator Dino Melaye among other PDP stalwarts.”

However, reacting to the allegation, Dogara who denied any links or connection to the alleged internet fraudster, said he has agreed to waive his rights for trial and ready to go to jail if the APC can prove its allegations.

Dogara wondered why similar allegations were not leveled against some APC Governors, who had appeared in similar photos with an alleged money launderer, Mompha.

The statement entitled, “The fatuous and infantile statement by the smellfungus called Yekini Nabena” reads; “The statement issued by one Yekini Nabena on behalf of the All Progressives Congress (APC) desperately seeking to link Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara to suspected cyber criminals on the basis of a group picture taken at a public event, is to say the least; infantile, rash and fatuous.

“This smellfungus, called Nabena should have known that it is share mindlessness to attempt to execute mischief and blackmail in plain sight before the public some of whom are better informed. Who is that fool that links people to criminal activity simply because they appeared in a group picture at a public event comprising of people from different walks of life?

“If appearing in a group photograph is what Nabena is now using to establish a link or connection to crimes or alleged criminals then why didn’t he issue such a statement in the wake of the arrest of a suspected money launderer by name Ismaila Mustapha, AKA: Mompha whose pictures with notable personalities including some APC Governors are all over the social media? Is Nabena guilty of selective amnesia or share perfidy? Who is Nabena scared of? Who is he trying to fool?

“For the records, Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara has agreed to waive his right to a trial and go to jail if Nabena establishes any form of links or connection between him and the alleged cyber criminal before the event where the picture was taken and after the event until now. For Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara, that picture was just another picture among the thousands, if not hundred of thousands of such pictures with Nigerians from all walks of life.

“If the said Nabena is worth his salt, next time he speaks he should speak to issues affecting the welfare of our union which are well known to all discerning Nigerians. Nabena should or ought to know that there is no honour in speaking about group pictures taken at public events when the nation is bleeding and most Nigerian families are struggling and hurting.”
