Former boxing champion and one of the most famous trainers, Roger Mayweather — Floyd Mayweather‘s uncle — has died at the age of 58, TMZ reports.
Roger Mayweather was a two-weight world champion with a professional record of 59-13 in a career that spanned nearly two decades.
Roger, nicknamed the Black Mamba, won the WBA and Lineal super-featherweight world titles in 1983 and also secured the WBC light-welterweight strap in 1987.
He trained his nephew Floyd when he turned professional in 1996 for two years until Floyd Sr was released from prison.
Roger returned to his corner in 2000 and was his trainer until 2012 as he became the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
According to TMZ Sports, the 58-year-old passed on after suffering health problems.
“My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring.
“Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing. Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace,” Mayweather Jr said in a statement.
It is the second family tragedy to strike the Mayweather family in recent weeks.
Floyd’s ex-girlfriend Josie Harris was found dead in her car outside her California home last week.
