The presidency has reacted to the speculation that President Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), are having a frosty relationship.
In a statement on Saturday, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, said the relationship between Buhari and Tinubu has been cordial.
The APC, the ruling party, has been embroiled in a leadership crisis which is spinning off speculations that the president’s loyalists are at daggers drawn with those of Tinubu over the former Lagos state governor’s presidential ambition.
Tinubu has issued a statement, saying he has not yet decided on a 2023 presidential bid.
On Thursday, the Adams Oshiomhole-led national working committee (NWC) was dissolved by the national executive committee (NEC) of the APC at the behest of the president.
Some members of the dissolved NWC had threatened to seek legal remedy to the action but backtracked. Oshiomhole, who is Tinubu’s ally, as well said he has accepted the dissolution of the NWC in good faith.
In the statement, Shehu accused the opposition of stoking the rumour of a rift between the president and Tinubu.
“The very essence of the requests put to the Emergency National Executive Committee meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by President Muhammadu Buhari, which were unanimously approved aim to pull back the party, faced with an existential crisis from the brink of collapse, follow the constitution and take everyone along,” he said.
“While this action has been widely accepted with great relief by lovers of democracy and the rank and file of the membership, we are concerned that political vulturism masquerading as “smart analysis” is selling the commentary that this is a Buhari-Tinubu “showdown.” Nothing can be farther from the truth.
”To put the records straight: In the formation of this great party and giving it leadership, President Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who are reckoned as the founding fathers of the APC are both inspired by democratic norms, national interest and not at all by partisan motivations. These are the qualities that have made them move past cynical distractions.
”They are in touch with one another. Their relationship remains as strong as ever and between the two of them, only they know how they manage their enviable relationship. Try as hard as they could, the opposition parties have used all their intellectuals and their supporters in the media to break this relationship and have failed. And they won’t.
”For President Buhari who has received much of the cynical commentary, Nigerians know him as someone who will not do anything with bad intentions. Neither will he do anything out of partisan motivations or for himself.
”This whole exercise, that should lead to massive reform and overhaul of the leadership of the party, as he said in that brilliant speech, was ”to save the APC from the imminent self-destruction. We have to move ahead. We have to take everyone with us and ensure that the party is run in accordance with democratic norms and with consensus. We have to work for the benefit of the country.”
”The leaders of the party, who have received two successive massive mandates to govern the country and a majority of the states should be judged by how this exercise turns out in achieving these objectives, not cursed at the mere commencement of the process.”
Court Adjourns Suit Seeking Uzodinma’s Removal As Imo Governor Until July 20
The Federal High Court Abuja, has adjourned until July 20, a suit filed by Reform and Advancement Party (RAP) and its 2019 governorship candidate, Mr Okere Kingdom asking the court to restrain Gov. Hope Uzodinma from acting as Imo governor.
When the matter was called on Wednesday, Kingdom told the court that he filed an application praying the court to abridge the time within which the defendants would file their responses.
Under the rule of law, the defendants have 30 days to respond but the plaintiff told the court that he made the application for the court to abridge the time due to the urgency of the matter.
Kingdom, who is also a lawyer, maintained that the matter was of constitutional importance because Hope Uzodinma was occupying the seat of Imo governor illegally, having not participated in the 2019 election as a candidate of any political party.
All the defendants objected to the application on the grounds that they needed the time given by the constitution to respond.
Counsel to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Mr Alhassan Umar, SAN, told the court that in line with the principles of fair hearing, the defendants needed to take sufficient time as allocated by the law to respond.
He argued that the plaintiff could not take the required time to file his processes only to ask the court to abridge the time for the respondents.
The judge, Justice Okon Abang adjourned the matter until July 20 to hear the application.
The judge also directed that hearing notices should be served on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since the party was not represented in court.
RAP and its 2019 governorship candidate, Mr Okere Kingdom approached the court seeking judicial interpretation on whether the All Progressives congress (APC) indeed sponsored Gov. Hope Uzodinma in the 2019 Imo governorship election.
Kingdom said that the suit was predicated on the judgment of the Supreme Court which affirmed Uche Nwosu as the duly nominated 2019 Imo governorship candidate of the APC.
He said that one of the issues he wanted the court to determine was whether Uzodinma lawfully participated and was sponsored by the APC to contest the 2019 Imo governorship election in accordance with Section 177 (c) of the 1999 Constitution.
“This is having regard to the tenor, clear and unambiguous legal implications/consequences of the judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in appeal no: SC/1384/2019 which upheld the decision of both the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court and affirmed Uche Nwosu as the authentic and duly elected/nominated 2019 Imo State governorship candidate of the APC.
How Obaseki Paid ₦15 Billion To PDP For Guber Ticket — Ize-Iyamu
The All Progressives Congress (APC), gubernatorial candidate in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has accused the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki of bribing his way to emerge as the party’s flag bearer in the upcoming poll.
Ize-Iyamu alleged that Obaseki paid the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ₦15 billion to emerge as its governorship candidate.
He made the allegation in a statement signed by John Mayaki, his campaign Director of Communications.
The APC governorship candidate charged the state governor to explain to people of the state how he came about such a huge fund.
He also expressed optimism that he would defeat Obaseki at the poll on September 19.
“He is also yet to explain to the people of Edo State where he got the 15 billion Naira he paid the PDP tax-collectors to facilitate his imposition as the party’s emergency-hour candidate.”
“It is no surprise, given the nature of Obaseki’s administration and sharp practices of both governor and appointees that such an agency is missing in Edo State.”
Obaseki had emerged as PDP’s governorship candidate in Edo State after all aspirants stepped down for him.
