Eight gunmen that launched a Thursday night attack on the Orlu Divisional Police Headquarters in Imo state will not live to tell the story as they were gunned down.

The assailants were said to have hit the police formation in seven vehicles and were engaged by a joint security team that overpowered and inflicted heavy casualty on them.

The vehicles were seized.

Reports said that during a gun duel that lasted hours, the joint security team received reinforcements from the 34 artillery brigade of the Nigerian Army in Obinze, Owerri.

Witnesses recalled sleeping with their hearts in their mouths as the sound of incessant gunshots rent the air and sent residents scampering for safety.

A witness who asked not to be named said that his cousin was hit by a stray bullet while an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) was set ablaze at Umuna junction of the ancient town.

The Punch quoted an unnamed senior policeman as confirming the incident, adding that the remains of the slain gunmen and their vehicles were driven to the State Police Command headquarters in Owerri.

The senior policeman said that no policeman was killed and the police division was not razed by the gunmen.
